Let Them Eat Cake

Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France. To her right are her impoverished people seeking reform, and to her left are luxury, fame and power, all of which are things Marie Antoinette was known for; symbolized by the striking semblance of gold. She was ignorant of her land’s worsening plight, and this is represented by the way she smirks to her left while holding a glass of champagne. Though it was never proven to be true, “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche” or better known as “Let them eat cake” is the famous quote she allegedly uttered upon being informed that her starving subjects had no bread. Eventually, the people decided that they’ve had enough, thus the incitement of the French revolution, ultimately leading to the king and queen’s execution by guillotine. This is especially significant in the present times, where good leadership and empathy are values that vindicate one from abuse — by this manner, the nation can collectively stay afloat and move forward.
